About the exhibition

A selection of photographs and prints drawn from two decades of painting outdoors.

Painting Outside, Outside Painting brings together work from an outdoor painting practice that runs alongside the artist’s studio work in painting and printmaking. Working with paint and a camera, the artist responds to the environment and the traces of its past inhabitants.

The process involves identifying places and objects, considering the relationship between a subject and the surrounding terrain, choosing colors and shapes, and documenting the results.

The practice spans three series: Abstraction for Dogs, made in the East Village from 2002 to 2005; House Paintings, created in several upstate locations from 2014 to 2019; and Remnants in the Woods (2026).

About the Artist

Laura Sue

King

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Laura Sue King was raised in separate households by a feminist schoolteacher and a hippie potter. Her focus on how we experience color in painting began as a graduate student at Hunter College, where she currently teaches Printmaking and Color Theory. King has exhibited internationally in Argentina, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the United States. She has been honored both as an artist and teacher, receiving an AIM award from the Bronx Museum of the Arts, an international printmaking residency from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute on the island of Mauritius, and grants from Hunter College, the New School, and New York State. Her exhibitions and curatorial projects have been reviewed in Artforum and the New York Times. King lives and works in the Village of Fleischmanns with her partner and their dog.
